We are an independent educational charity, receiving no direct state grant or subsidy for our work. Founded in 1972, we have sustained our activities by demonstrating the critical value of heritage to all, whilst delivering high quality research and public engagement.

What does York Archaeological Trust contribute to the local economy?
JORVIK Viking Centre has contributed over £500million to York’s economy since opening in 1984
Welcomes around 500,000 visitors in total to YAT activities
In addition to JORVIK Viking Festival puts on more than 300 events each year
Employs over 200 people
Is supported by nearly 400 volunteers, giving over 6,000 hours of support time
Has engaged over 3,000 people since 2001 in ‘Archaeology Live’ excavations
Runs archaeological and community research programmes from offices in Nottingham, Sheffield and Glasgow, as well as York.
