The Swinegate Tablets
These 14th century box wood tablets with wax inlays were excavated in Swinegate, York during the 1990s. They appear to contain a Chaucerian English poem and part of a legal document made in Latin. Working with Bradford University we are scanning these tablets using a variety of methods to determine the data that they hold and what more it tells us about life in medieval York.
The resulting images are being translated by Professor Linne Mooney from the University of York to see what they can reveal about life in medieval York. This work is also being set in the wider landscape of the city through new excavation and small find reports.
