Project Officer – Built Heritage

(Working in the Sheffield or York office)

Salary Grade Range: £21,000 to £26,500 depending upon experience

The role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced heritage professional to help us expand our team and deliver a range of consulting and contracting services in the sphere of the built environment. The role may be based either in our York or Sheffield offices, but projects work will be national in scope. This is a permanent position with a 3-month probationary period. The successful candidate will demonstrate a thorough understanding of the planning process and current best practice and approaches towards the historic environment. The role requires experience in research, fieldwork recording and the analysis of a range of historic buildings as well as a wider understanding of the built environment including issues of setting.

Built Heritage is a key growth area for York Archaeological Trust. There is scope to upgrade the role to Project Manager depending on performance and development of our client portfolio. The successful candidate will demonstrate their ability to develop client relationships and willingness to progress.

A degree in Buildings Archaeology, Built Heritage or equivalent experience is essential. A driving licence is essential, and CIfA or IHBC membership is preferred.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain safe methods of working in adherence with the Trust’s Health and Safety Policy to minimise risk to colleagues, other workers and members of the public and achieve the Trust’s health and safety objectives.
  • Deliver projects associated with the built environment to time and budget from inception and design through fieldwork, analysis and completion to meet client aspirations in order to meet the Trust’s financial objectives.
  • In the medium term, help to develop streams of funding to grow the Trust’s built environment portfolio and deliver in-house training to build capacity in staff skills and resources within the Trust.
  • With guidance produce Project Designs/Written Schemes of Investigation in negotiation with Local Government Archaeologists and Conservation Officers.
  • To be conversant with the Historic England building recording levels and be able to undertake recording to such levels on your own or as part of a team.
  • Produce statements of significance and impact assessments for built heritage assets including analysis of setting. Prepare desk based assessments, impact assessments, setting assessments, and undertake research and survey, assessment and analysis of built heritage assets
  • Provide advice and support to clients. Liaise with internal and external specialists in order to deliver project objectives. Develop strong working partnerships with a range of external professional organisations.
  • Develop specialist skills to assist the Trust in its strategic aims.
  • Tender for (and support others in preparing tenders for) historic building and built environment projects
  • Adhere to standards and guidance set out by the CIfA and ensure those working on projects comply with the same to ensure a high standard of professional compliance
  • Provide quality assurance through editing and review of Trust reports
  • Maintain records in line with the Trust’s project management and quality assurance policies
  • Represent the Trust in the public sphere as part of its commitment to community heritage, dissemination and widening participation
  • Public outreach activities will also form an integral part of this role. The York Archaeological Trust is an educational charity with a clear remit for enhancing public engagement with archaeology and heritage.
