Shipwreck archaeology presents intriguing and challenging conservation issues, not usually seen in terrestrial environments. We have built up skills and expertise over the last 20 years, working on a diverse range of projects ranging from the English Channel to the Arabian Gulf.
York Archaeological Trust offers unrivalled facilities and valuable knowledge on the conservation of waterlogged organic finds.
Our experienced wood technologists are leaders in the field and have a range of freeze-dryers and treatment tanks capable of taking timber up to 4 metres in length.
York Archaeological Trust can give expert advise on the conservation and construction of mount making for artefacts on display in public and private environments.
Conserved artefacts need to be displayed under optimum environmental conditions including relative humidity, light levels and temperature control.
York Archaeological Trust work in the field advising on lifting and packing for transport to ensure the successful recovery of fragile and delicate objects.
We also offer on-site ‘first aid’ for artefacts already within a collection that are in need of careful micro-excavation.
