Maritime Conservation

York Archaeological Trust are one of the country’s leading labs for conservation of artefacts and structures from a marine environment. Shipwreck archaeology presents intriguing and challenging conservation issues, not usually seen in terrestrial environments. We have built up skills and expertise over the last 20 years, working on a diverse range of projects ranging from the English Channel to the Arabian Gulf.

Wood Remains

York Archaeological Trust offers unrivalled facilities and valuable knowledge on the conservation of waterlogged organic finds.

Our experienced wood technologists are leaders in the field and have a range of freeze-dryers and treatment tanks capable of taking timber up to 4 metres in length.

Display Conservation

York Archaeological Trust can give expert advise on the conservation and construction of mount making for artefacts on display in public and private environments.

Conserved artefacts need to be displayed under optimum environmental conditions including relative humidity, light levels and temperature control.

York Archaeological Trust work in the field advising on lifting and packing for transport to ensure the successful recovery of fragile and delicate objects.

We also offer on-site ‘first aid’ for artefacts already within a collection that are in need of careful micro-excavation.

Bespoke Training

York Archaeological Trust offer courses on all aspects of conservation including: finds handling, packaging, corrosion prevention and conservation.

Training can be delivered on location or within our state-of-the-art conservation facilities at our head office in York.

Artefact Assemblages

York Archaeological Trust can assess artefact assemblages for conservation and research for developer-funded and other projects.

We X-ray and assess the artefact assemblages to identify conservation requirements, stability and potential for further research.
