Community Engagement

York Archaeological Trust empowers communities to explore the archaeology around them. Our innovative participant-led approach uses a wide range of engagement techniques – from site visits to oral history, from experimental archaeology to dance and the creative arts – to enable everyone to engage with the past.

You can read some case studies of recent work we have carried out for clients below:

Backed by a team of archaeologists experienced in delivering community projects and the public engagement experience of the JORVIK Group’s award-winning attractions, we offer a range of services that get people involved in the study of their past, widening access to heritage and delivering archaeology with a positive social impact.

We offer a variety of formal and informal learning opportunities, from classroom sessions and training to opportunities to get hands-on and explore objects in a range of settings. Our open days and site visits give people a chance to see archaeology in action and speak to our archaeologists to find out what they’ve discovered. YAT’s YourDIG program offers many ways for people to interact with the remains of the past in creative and interesting ways through a series of co-created exhibitions highlighting a range of community-led initiatives. Hosted at DIG, one of YAT’s visitor attractions in York, the exhibitions are a platform for local people to show off their own adventures in archaeology to the museum’s visitors.
