The exhibition introduces the key figures of the Viking period, explaining how they were conquerors, explorers, founders and kings. Visitors can explore how these individuals were celebrated and commemorated and what archaeological evidence can tell us about their stories. The themed Viking encampment children’s area uses saga telling, games and activities to encourage all ages to find out more.
In 2018, a replica Viking tent was added to the exhibition and shown for the first time at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. This huge creation was based on the tent found in the Oseberg ship burial and is now the main focal point of the exhibition, as well as being big enough to fit a whole school group inside. The interior of the tent includes a replica of the chair also found on the ship burial, audio material about the exhibition’s Viking characters and a fire pit complete with campfire smell.
