2 WEEK EXCAVATION COURSE DETAILS

Please note: there will be discounts of 10% on course fees for former trainees undertaking a longer course, and for Friends of YAT.


The aim of the 2-week excavation course is to develop competence in the range of methods and techniques currently used on archaeological excavations in Britain. Main activities: excavation (trowelling, mattocking and sieving), site recording (written record, planning, levelling and section drawing), stratigraphic analysis (including Harris matrix), finds processing and environmental sampling. In addition to free admission to JORVIK, the ARC and Barley Hall, this course includes lectures, seminars and visits.

Trainees who have already completed a 2-week excavation course at St Leonard's Hospital can also receive training in surveying, photography and building recording by arrangement.

Typical programme:

Monday
Introduction, lecture on the St Leonards Hospital dig, site tour and lecture on excavation techniques a.m. Excavation, site recording, etc. p.m.

Tuesday
Site work all day, except for 2-3p.m. finds processing seminar. 7.30p.m. lecture on the archaeology of York.

Wednesday
Site work all day, except for 2-3p.m. finds conservation seminar.

Thursday
Finds processing all day, except for 2-3p.m. pottery analysis seminar.

Friday
Site work all day. Evening barbeque.

Saturday
Free day.

Sunday
Free day.

Monday
Environmental sampling all day.

Tuesday
Site work all day, except for 11-12 stratigraphic analysis seminar.

Wednesday
Site work all day, except for 11-12 heritage management seminar.

Thursday
Site work all day, except for 11-12.30 Conservation Lab tour.

Friday
Excavation all day. Evening barbeque.

The 2 week course can also be taken as a package with the Artefact course, cost £550 (£720 with accommodation).

Please note: the order of some activities may be subject to change due to weather conditions and the rotation of the training. The Artefact course may be cancelled if there is insufficient demand.
