1 WEEK EXCAVATION COURSE DETAILS
Please note: there will be discounts of 10% on course
fees for former trainees undertaking a longer course, and for Friends
of YAT.
The aim of the 1 week excavation course is to provide an understanding
of the main methods and techniques currently used in archaeological excavations
in Britain. Main activities: excavation (trowelling, mattocking and sieving),
site recording (written record, planning and levelling) and basic finds
and environmental sample processing. In addition to free admission to
JORVIK and the ARC, this course includes lectures and seminars.
Typical programme:
Monday
Introduction, lecture on the St Leonards Hospital dig, site tour and lecture
on excavation techniques a.m. Excavation (digging, sieving, site recording)
p.m.
Tuesday
Excavation all day, except for 2-3p.m. finds processing seminar. 7.30p.m.
lecture on the archaeology of York.
Wednesday
Finds processing a.m., environmental sampling p.m., except for 2-3p.m.
finds conservation seminar.
Thursday
Excavation all day, except for 2-3p.m. pottery analysis seminar.
Friday
Excavation all day. Evening barbeque.
Courses available: Any five day week (Monday to Friday) during the training
excavation.
Cost
£220
or £305 with accommodation provided (from 5th July)
The 1 week course can also be booked as a package with the Artefacts
course, cost £395 (£515 with accommodation).
Please note: the order of these activities may be subject
to change due to weather conditions and the rotation of the training.
The Artefact course may be cancelled if there is insufficient demand.
