ARTEFACT COURSE DETAILS
Please note: there will be discounts of 10% on course
fees for former trainees undertaking another course, and for Friends of
YAT.
The aim of the artefacts course is to provide thorough training in the
finds processing and environmental sampling that normally takes place
on archaeological excavations in Britain. Main activities: finds processing
and conservation; artefact analysis; environmental sample processing and
analysis; and the presentation of the results in reports and museum displays.
This is primarily a practical course, which will deal with the material
being recovered from the St Leonard's Hospital excavations.
Provisional programme:
Monday
Introduction, lecture and site tour a.m. Finds cleaning and environmental
sample sieving p.m.
Tuesday
Animal bone analysis a.m. Finds conservation p.m. 7.30pm lecture on the
archaeology of York.
Wednesday
Pottery research a.m. Finds packaging and storage.
Thursday
Pottery sorting and ceramic building material analysis a.m. Environmental
sample sorting and recording p.m.
Friday
Sorting and recording finds a.m. Practical artefact and site interpretation
p.m. Evening barbeque..
Course available: (Monday-Friday) 5-9 July.
