LONGER COURSES
A more in-depth look at archaeology. In addition to the free admission
to JORVIK and the ARC, these courses include lectures, tours and other
visits.
1 week excavation module
An introduction to archaeological excavation techniques.
Courses available: Any five day week (Wednesday to Sunday) during the
training excavation.

2 week fieldwork course
A more in-depth introduction to archaeological fieldwork techniques.
Activities: excavation, building and site recording, surveying, finds
processing and environmental sampling.
Additional visit to the YAT Conservation laboratories, a guided archaeological
tour of York and lectures.
Courses available: 12-23 June, 26 June-7 July, 10-21 July, 24 July- 4
August, 7-18 August, 21 August-1 September. Site open Wednesdays-Sundays
(Monday and Tuesday, free time).

1 week artefact study and environmental sampling
module
An introduction to finds processing, conservation and analysis; environmental
sample processing and analysis; and the presentation of the results
in reports and museum displays. This is primarily a practical course,
which will deal with the material being recovered from the St Leonard's
excavations.
Courses available: (Wednesday-Sunday) 3-7 July, 24-28 July, 7-11 August.

1 week building recording module
These courses will consider the recording and interpretation of standing
buildings. The emphasis will be on the basic recording techniques
and the identification of building materials and building methods.
These courses are primarily practical, involving study of the standing
remains of the medieval hospital and city wall which form part of
the St Leonard's Hospital site

Excavation schedule
The 2001 backfill will be removed from the trenches before the training
excavation begins. In addition, the trenches will not be backfilled until
after the end of the training excavation. Consequently, the excavations
will be dealing with important archaeological deposits throughout, from
Week 1.
Accommodation
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNIVERSITY ACCOMMODATION IS ONLY AVAILABLE FROM 9TH
JULY.
Self catering accommodation is at University of York campus, Heslington,
York in a self contained 12 bedded house. Single rooms are available with
wash hand basins (all bedding is supplied but bring your own towels),
shared toilets, bath and shower rooms and fully fitted kitchen with dining
area. On-site car parking is available next to the accommodation.
There is an on-site shop, laundrette, bar and fast-food outlet. You also
have the use of University facilities including the cafeteria in the Halls
of Residence. The accommodation is a 5 minute walk from Heslington village
with shops, banks, pubs and buses to York. There is a regular bus service
from campus to the excavation site.
Alternatively, there is a wide range of hotels, university campus rooms,
bed and breakfast establishments and hotels for your accommodation in
York. They have a correspondingly wide range of prices; the cheapest,
in a 2-4 bedded, shared, youth-hostel, is about £14 per night; single
university rooms, about 1 mile from the town centre, are about £20
per night/£120 per 7 day week; and bed & breakfast/small hotels
start at about £25.00 per person per night. York Archaeological
Trust will help you to make arrangements if you indicate which style/price
of accommodation you want; confirming these provisional bookings and making
payment will be your responsibility.
