| Week 3 27th June - 1st July 2001 | ||||||||||
| This week the trainees were on site for only one or two days, for taster courses. This allowed them to achieve a basic understanding of archaeological fieldwork, and to discover whether they would like to get involved in further archaeological excavations. In all, 47 trainees took part including a family of four and a number of under 18s, some with parents in tow. Three birthdays, including a 60th, were celebrated by a session digging, and also one ruby wedding! One enthusiastic participant later wrote of the experience: | ||||||||||

I found the smallest piece of Roman pottery, I was so excited!'

| Trench 1 and Trench 2 | ||||||||||
| Despite the fact that new trainees were turning up each day, the progress of the excavations was steady. In Trenches 1 and 2 extensive post-medieval (16th-19th century) demolition and dump deposits have been revealed. They probably resulted from the use and demolition of buildings that succeeded the medieval hospital. Much Roman pottery has been recovered from these deposits in Trench 1, perhaps because they were brought to the surface in the past by people digging into the underlying Roman deposits. | ![]() |

Post-medieval brick walls and cobble paths have been found at the north-east end of Trench 3, and will be investigated during Week 4. The main news is that the World War 2 air-raid shelter has been located in the south-west end of the trench. The top has been demolished, but the lower parts of the reinforced concrete walls have survived. Although the floor has not been reached yet, it is expected that the shelter will be fully exposed in time for National Archaeology Day on 21-22 July. | |||||||||
| Finds | ||||||||||
| Cutting back through the levels, finds are starting to be recovered. Mostly these are of recent date, but mixed in is material from the Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Viking, Norman and Medieval periods - clues to what we might find later. | ![]() |
