Week 2 20-24 June 2001
The weather improved greatly after last week's downpours, and much progress was made. We welcomed another batch of enthusiastic trainee diggers, including a family from Virginia, USA.

General view of the site
Trench 1
In Trench 1 the excavation of rubble, which is thought to have resulted from the demolition of the buildings which stood on the site in the 1840s, produced several more fragments of medieval window glass. At least two of these appear to be part of the same design as the fragment featured last week The south corner of the demolished WW2 air raid shelter has also been located. Trench 2
The infirmary wall
In Trench 2 the major discovery has been the demolished north-east wall of the hospital infirmary block extending out from the undercroft. Finding this encourages us to believe that further stretches of the wall will survive intact in Trench 2, and perhaps even in Trench 3.
Trench 3
In Trench 3, the trench excavated by Time Team in 1999, has been re-excavated, revealing part of the Victorian archaeological garden, which is very well preserved. View of trench, with detail of planning
The fine weather towards the end of the week showed up the nearby multangular tower at its best, and reminds us of the Roman treasures that we may yet discover.
