The Proposed World Heritage Site
The proposed World Heritage Site is a large area of nearly 318ha. The site consists of the thick archaeological deposits, many preserved in anoxic conditions, which provide a uniquely representative and well-preserved record of human urban settlement over two millennia. It also includes ancient burial grounds, including a possible gladiators' cemetery, which both preserve and have provided demographic data on the urban population.
The proposed World Heritage Site lies within the Area of Archaeological Importance and the Central Historic Core Conservation Area.
