artisana skilled craftsman

colonialiterally ‘colony’, the highest status which could be granted to a town in Roman times; part of the civilian settlement at York had been given this title by AD 237
corneliana semi-precious form of quartz, red or reddish-white in colour
Dissolution(of the monasteries) the closure of monasteries, many of which were pulled down, on the orders of Henry VIII in the 1530s
draw knifea blade with a handle at each end at right angles to it, drawn (pulled) towards the user to remove wood from a surface
Eucharistthe most important act of worship in the Christian church, in which bread and wine are blessed and consumed as symbols of Christ’s body and blood
Huguenota French Protestant of the 16th and 17th centuries; many emigrated to Britain because France was a Catholic country
