Project Background

The Greater York Community Archaeology project evolved from an initiative supported by English Heritage, York Archaeological Forum, City of York Council and York Archaeological Trust in 2003-4. As an increasing number of archaeology and interest groups were forming in the Greater York area, it became clear that more assistance was needed to help these groups resource their projects. It also became clear that local projects focusing on history, archaeology, buildings and battlefields were a great way to bring communities together, and empower them to care for their historic environment.
A bid was made to the Heritage Lottery Fund for money to fund the project for five years. In December 2004 the HLF agreed to fund the project and awarded a grant of £212,000. This grant has enabled the appointment of a Community Archaeologist and has provided money for the Community Resource. York Archaeological Trust was chosen to host the Community Archaeologist post and will be contributing financially to the day to day running of the project. The project commenced on 1st March 2005.
