Excavations in York in 1973 produced an intriguing disc-shaped
object only 38mm in diameter. It was in good condition and needed no
conservation. When it had been cleaned it was identified as ivory, probably
walrus. Lettering was carved around the circumference and a slightly
stooping figure filled the centre.
This figure is wearing a long-sleeved knee-length garment with skirt
and belt. His right arm is outstretched and the hand holds a purse.
Above the purse, and apparently falling into it, are three circles with
dots in the centre depicting coins.
