Once the site director, the conservator, the finds researcher and other specialists have written their reports, these are passed to the editor. First a decision needs to be made as to how the various reports will be published. Will they appear individually as articles in relevant journals? Will they be brought together as a major site report or study of a particular topic? Will they be published on the internet? |

| The true story Whatever the medium of publication, the editor's job is to ensure that the text and catalogues are factually correct, consistent, well written and pitched at a level appropriate to the intended audience. The editor and illustrator work closely together to make sure that text and illustrations tell the same story. The editor's role is rather like that of a safety net, catching problems and mistakes that everyone else has missed.
