Treatment and analysis
During lifting the cheek piece was supported on a soil block and then taken directly to the conservation laboratory for examination. It was carefully removed from the soil, which was then examined, without success, for any further fragments of the helmet. The cheek piece was in poor condition, partly bent out of shape and covered in cracks. Beneath a thin layer of soil, patches of smooth dark green patina and some beautiful surface decoration were visible, although corrosion had left many areas pitted and full of tiny holes.

A rigid support needed to be made on which the object could rest whilst being cleaned. Layers of glass fibre and polyester resin were moulded to the shape of the object (right) and the soil and corrosion products were removed, using hand tools such as scalpels and soft brushes. All this was carried out under the microscope to ensure that no important information was lost. The metal was stabilised against further corrosion and loose pieces replaced using adhesive.
