Stone Figure

If you look up at the walls of old churches you sometimes see carved stone figures. These were once painted and were there to help tell stories from the Bible and teach people about God.

Archaeologists found this stone figure which had never been finished but was thrown away half made. Perhaps it was going to be put somewhere on York Minster but then someone changed their mind.

The painting on the right shows how the figure might have looked when it was finished.

By looking at the shape of the figure we think it was going to be a woman standing on some sort of beast. Experts think the woman was meant to be Joy and the animal was Idleness — so the moral is, if you want to be happy then keep busy!

We can tell by the clothes the woman was wearing that this was a medieval carving of about 1300.
