Woollen Sock

Remains of a Viking sock

This old woollen sock is a thousand years old. The wet soils where it had been buried made sure it did not dry out and disappear into dust. Archaeologists found it in a rubbish pit.

The Vikings used one needle in their knitting, not two as we do today.

Restored sock

There were lots of holes and a patch in the sock when it was thrown away, but once it had a red band around the top and probably looked quite jolly. You can see it at JORVIK in York.
