Toilet Seat

Seat as found in pit

The shape of some objects never changes. Two oak planks found preserved in medieval soil in York were quite obviously old toilet seats, as they had circular holes cut through them. One of them probably once had a lid.

The planks were part of box-constructed toilets which were placed over pits dug into the earth (cess pits) in medieval backyards. There is evidence from several sites that old rag and even soft moss was used as toilet paper.

Planks with three holes in them have been found at sites in London — a friendly arrangement!
