Jubilee Medal

2002 is Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee and many souvenirs will be made to help us remember the occasion.

Queen Victoria's Jubilee medal.

In 2001, during archaeological excavations at the medieval St Leonard's Hospital in York, part of a Victorian garden was discovered. The garden had included pieces of decorated medieval stonework from the old hospital.

Tucked behind one of the pieces of stone was this copper alloy medallion which had been made to celebrate Queen Victoria's golden jubilee in 1887.

The Victorian garden

I wonder if it was lost or placed there for us to find. I don't suppose it was expected to turn up just in time for another queen's jubilee over a hundred years later!
