Wicker Lid

The lid during excavation

Do you have old broken things in your cellar, attic or garage?

Archaeologists found part of a lid from a box in what had been the cellar of an old house dating to the 1200s or 1300s.

Reconstruction of the building in which it was found.

The wet soils helped to preserve the lid and conservators have now cleaned it so we can see how it was made.

It must have looked like a modern picnic hamper or laundry basket as it was made out of woven willow rods. Perhaps it was used to store fine linen which could be kept fresh with lavender and sweet-smelling herbs.
