Here a fibreglass backing was made for it so that the other face could be cleaned using swabs and soft brushes. Because the wood was waterlogged it needed to undergo stabilisation treatment before it could be safely dried out. Stabilisation involved impregnating the wood with a synthetic polymer solution (polyethylene glycol). This wax replaced the water in the wood and gave the object strength. | ||||||||

After treatment the wax was warmed slightly to soften it. The lid could then be flattened gradually by applying gentle pressure from above, and the result was very satisfactory. Finally, a Perspex® mount was constructed to support the object whilst it was being studied and drawn.
